Over/Double booking appointments

I can't count the times I'm asked, "why do hairstylist double book?"  I honest can't answer for everyone.  I can say that I don't overbook.  But if I had to guess based on what I've heard at different conferences and from some of my colleagues.  The consenus is, "I double book because clients are late or don't show up for appointments.   If I book that person with someone else, I will have something to do if she doesn't show." For some clients being late is habitual.  As a stylist I don't keep a ridgid schedule however, I don't like constantly late clients.  An occassional, late flight,  stuck in traffic, flat tire, child sick, etc excuse is acceptable.  Like many other careers, time is money.  You're paying for my time and timeslot.

If you are habitually late and that stylist doesn't want to "fire" you, she may schedule you will someone else.  That way, she will have something to do until you finally arrive.  :)

I've had several new clients come to me prepared to wait a few minutes before sitting in the chair and are shocked when they realized I'm ready for them at their appointed time.  In order for me to keep that up, it means if your are constantly late and don't want me to schedule you at a later time than desired (because your never on time) then we will have to either part ways or I will have to reschedule everytime your late.  :( I know that sounds extreme but that's the only way I can stay on schedule.  Either that or I will have to schedule you with another stylist.

Which bring me to rush hours clients. You get off at 5pm, you work at least 30 minutes from the salon.  Scheduling a 5:30 appointment isn't wise.  Prehaps you should schedule your appointment at 6-6:30  which allows extra time for mishaps.  Last min chat with boss, traffic, flat tire, etc.  It's best to be a few mins early then always late.   You know it's impossible to make it across town in rush hour traffic in 30 mins.  When you're late you are infringing on the next client's time and can potentially throw the stylist book off completely.
