  • If I know it has been 6 weeks since my last relaxer, why won't my stylist give me another one at 6 weeks. Karen....Detroit Normal hair growth is 1/2 inch every month.  Some of us may get a little more, others may get a little less.  When you go in for a New Growth application, the first thing your stylist will do is look at the amount of new growth you have.  If it is not enough to do retouch she may suggest that you wait a couple of weeks.  Relaxing too soon may result in over-lapping relaxers, if done enoungh can be very damaging to your hair.  You should repspect your stylist opinion and wait while.  You'll find your hair will be much healthier if you let her do her job when it comes to chemical services.

Why do stylist over book? Tanisha P....... N. Y. For most stylist, it is not a common practice to over-book.  However, you must take into consideration that things happen that may throw his/her schedule off.  For example:  Someone may have schedule an appointment for a dooby.  As a stylist we know that it takes about 25-30 mins. to drape, shampoo/condition, roller wrap and place under the dryer.  With that in mind, we know that we can take clients 30mins apart for a dooby.  But, if that client is running late due to traffic or other personal reasons.  Our time is thrown off.  Another example, how many times have you scheduled for one service and decided to get something different?  I can't speak for every stylist but, I don't think anyone will purposely over-book.  A friend of mind said she always schedule 2 people for her first appointments in the morning especially on Saturday because someone may have overslept or decided not to come and didn't call.  So instead of sitting for an hour with nothing to do.  She started booking her morning appointments two at a time.  So think about all the times you were running a little late, due to traffic, baby sitter or husband was late etc. and you didn't notify your stylist.  In all fairness, the stylist can call you to let you know when she is behind also.  I have visited some salon's and we can all use a little help in the time management department.

What's the deal with some stylist only accepting cash? Angela........Charlotte,NC

Keep in mind that as a stylist, we are self-employed.  Many stylist have been given bad checks and just as the bank charge you a bad check fee, they also charge your stylist for submitting your bad check.  Some times the debt is never paid by the client.  If the client doesn't take care of her debt than that's money lost to that stylist.  To avoid getting burned some stylist opt not to take checks at all.  I have always, used the crebit/debit machines as well as checks and I have also been burned by people writting bad checks.  I have a $25 return check fee and if I can't locate you for whatever reason you vanished.  I have an attorney to handle that for me.  The client hasn't considered the bank will charge them, then they have to pay attorney fees.  I have been told by some stylist that they have put bad checks on the clients credit file.  Most of the time there is no cooperation with an accounts payable/receivable department.  Instead of going through running behind a client for payment, some clients opt to only accept cash.  Many times you can call and tell your stylist what's going on and she will be understanding.  I hope I was able to help.

Kids, Kids,Kids and salons don't mix? Help!! I agree, if a child is not having a service done he/she shouldn't have to endure sitting in a salon for hours.  It makes then ancy and they misbehave.  Keep in mind that most stylist have children.  How can I say to you, don't bring your child when I have a child.  Most salons have a kids room.  Which helps a lot.  The problem is, some children are not disciplined and that creates another problem.  We have a special room for children.  However, we hardly ever have to use it.  Most of the clients come in to relax and get away from the kids, husbands, etc.  so they opt not to bring there kids.  Maybe you should share your feeling with your stylist.  Ask her if she could schedule you at a time when kids won't be in the salon.

My stylist only does roller wraps. I've seen the other stylist do styles that I love. How do I ask him to let me try the next girl? Faith Columbia,SC Say it just like that.  Hey I'm going to let ______color my hair, cut my hair or give me that updo.  It's okay for you to try another stylist within the salon that you are patronizing.  We want you to stay with us rather than take your business else where.  Chair hopping is better than shop hopping.  Check with your stylist first.  Maybe he can do that style, you just never saw him do it.  Some people specialize in color, cuts, updos.  If you want that special color say, "I want you to cut my hair Friday but, I want Faith to hi-lite it first.  Can you check her book to see what time she has available?"  Remember, communication is the key.  Good luck!!

My stylist prices keep changing. How do I ask her about it? Just ask her.  Say, " I got the same thing last week and the price was different."  Why is tha

t? Keep in mind that many styles are a la carte, which means you pay per service. For example, if you got a shampoo/style that may be $5 but if you got a trim with your service that's $1.  So instead of paying $5 for a shampoo/style which is what you would normally pay.  This day, your price will be $6.

Can you shed some light on hair breakage or hair loss?

Please understand that your stylist may be the best person to diagnose why you have breakage or hair loss.  I have listed a couple of reasons why a persons hair may shed.  If you need more detail feel free to give me a call at 704-752-6155.

Alopecia- may be caused by a fungal or bacterial infection or inflammatory disease of the scalp.  When there is no apparent scalp abnormality, hair loss may be caused by nutritional deficiency, drugs, emotional trauma and other physiological changes. (See a doctor)

Androgenetic Alopecia-  Hair loss due to crash diets, oral contraceptives, medications vitamin deficiencies and thyroid disorders.

Postpartum Alopecia- Hair loss after having a baby.

Alopecia Areata- Sudden loss of hair in round or irregular patches without display of an inflamed scalp.  4 Million people suffer from this type of hair loss.

Telogen Effluvium- Premature shedding of hair in the resting phase can result from birth-control pills or if you follow a crash diet too low in protein.  Hair loss will reversed once the condition is corrected.

Traction or Traumatic AlopeciaDue to pulling, tight rollers, corn rows or excessive tension during brushing and combing, especially when hair is wet or chemical damage.  Condition is usually reversed once the trauma has stopped.

Tonya address men sitting around the salon. I have a problem with that. It seems they really have no reason there, except to hang out. Unfortunately, some salons permit loitering. It makes the customers uncomfortable and it can eventually make your salon an easy target for crime. Tell your stylist how this makes you feel and wait for a change. If nothing happens, you should consider finding another salon for your hair care needs.
